Separation Anxiety

How do I help my child with separation anxiety at drop-off?

6 min read · Updated · Untuk Anak Learning Space

The short answer

Separation anxiety is normal and usually peaks between 8 months and 3 years. The most effective response is a short, warm, honest goodbye, the same routine every day, and one familiar teacher who greets your child. Most children settle within two to four weeks.

Why it happens

A child who cries when you leave is showing you that your relationship matters. Separation distress appears around eight months, often peaks between 18 months and 3 years, and resurfaces after holidays, illness or any change at home. It is a sign of attachment, not of a badly adjusted child or a bad school.

What helps, in order of impact

  1. 1.A predictable goodbye ritual: the same three steps, the same words, every single day
  2. 2.A short goodbye. Lingering extends the distress rather than easing it
  3. 3.Honesty — always say you are leaving, and always say when you will return in a way they understand ('after rest time')
  4. 4.One key teacher who meets your child at the gate and takes over the connection
  5. 5.A comfort object from home if the school allows it
  6. 6.Arriving a little earlier, when the room is quieter

What tends to make it harder

  • Slipping away without saying goodbye — it teaches a child to watch you constantly
  • Long, repeated returns to the door
  • Discussing the drop-off anxiously in front of your child
  • Changing the routine every few days to see what works

How long should it take?

Most children move from crying at the door to settling within five to ten minutes over a two-to-four-week period. A good school will tell you honestly how long the tears lasted after you left — and send a photo when they stop.

When to look closer

  • Distress that stays intense for more than six weeks with no improvement
  • A child who cannot eat, sleep or play at school at all
  • New, strong fear of separation in an older child who was previously settled

In those cases the answer is usually a plan, not more time: shorter days, a slower build-up, or a conversation about what changed. Our founder is a psychology graduate and also offers private caregiver coaching for families who want a deeper look.

"The goal is not a child who never cries. It is a child who knows that goodbye is safe, because it always ends the same way."

Frequently asked questions

How long does separation anxiety last at preschool?
Most children settle within two to four weeks, with tears at the door easing to a few minutes. Distress that stays intense beyond about six weeks is worth reviewing with the teachers.
Should I sneak out to avoid tears?
No. Leaving without saying goodbye usually makes separation harder because the child starts monitoring you instead of playing. A short, clear, warm goodbye works better.
Is it normal for separation anxiety to come back?
Yes. It commonly returns after holidays, illness, a new sibling or a house move. The same routine that worked the first time usually works again, faster.
