What age should a child start preschool?

6 min read · Updated · Untuk Anak Learning Space

The short answer

Most children start preschool between the ages of 2 and 3, but readiness — not a birthday — is the better signal. A child who can separate for short periods, shows interest in other children, and can communicate basic needs in some way is usually ready to begin, often with short days at first.

Is there a right age to start?

In Indonesia and most of the world, children commonly begin a preschool programme somewhere between two and three years old. That range exists because it is when many children start seeking out other children rather than simply playing alongside them. But the range is wide on purpose. A cautious 3.5-year-old and a sociable 2-year-old can both be exactly on time.

key points

  • 2–3 years: the most common starting window for half days
  • 18 months–2 years: playdate or parent-accompanied classes are often a better first step
  • 4–6 years: children starting later usually settle quickly with a gradual introduction

Signs your child may be ready

  • They can be apart from you for an hour or two with a familiar adult
  • They watch other children with interest, or try to join in
  • They can show what they need — with words, signs, or by leading you to it
  • They can manage a simple routine: snack, tidy up, wash hands
  • They cope with a nap or rest away from home, at least sometimes

None of these need to be perfect. Toilet independence in particular is not a requirement at a school that works with toddlers — it is something we support, not a gate we place at the door.

Signs it may be worth waiting a little

  • A recent big change at home: a new baby, a move, a parent travelling
  • Illness or disrupted sleep that has not settled
  • Distress that lasts well beyond drop-off for weeks, with no upward trend

Waiting three months is not lost time for a young child. What matters far more than the start date is whether the environment is calm, small enough for your child to be known, and honest with you about how the day went.

Half day, full day, or something in between?

For a first experience, shorter is usually kinder. A half day gives a child a full arc — arrival, play, snack, group time, goodbye — without exhaustion. Many families move to full days after a term, once the routine feels ordinary rather than new.

How we approach it at Untuk Anak

We welcome children from 12 months to 7 years, and even as our community grows we keep group sizes intentionally personal, so a child starting young is never lost in a crowd. New families begin with a visit, then a trial day, then a starting plan built around your child rather than the calendar.

"The question is rarely "is my child old enough?" It is "is this the kind of place where my child will be noticed?""

Frequently asked questions

What age should a child start preschool?
Most children start preschool between 2 and 3 years old. Readiness signals — short separations, interest in other children, and being able to communicate basic needs — matter more than the exact age.
Does my child need to be toilet trained before preschool?
Not at Untuk Anak. We work with children from 12 months in daycare and preschool (and from 5 months in Baby & Me), so nappies and toilet learning are part of ordinary daily care and we support the process alongside you.
Is starting preschool at 4 too late?
No. Children who start at 4 or 5 usually settle quickly, especially with a gradual introduction. What matters is the quality of the environment, not the number of years attended.
