What developmental milestones matter between 2 and 6?

The short answer
Between two and six, children move from single words to full conversation, from parallel play to genuine cooperation, and from big movements to fine control. Milestones are ranges, not deadlines — but persistent loss of a skill, or very limited communication, is always worth checking.
Ages 2–3
- Two- to three-word phrases, growing quickly toward short sentences
- Runs, climbs stairs, kicks a ball; begins pedalling
- Plays beside other children more than with them
- Strong feelings, few tools to manage them — tantrums are typical here
Ages 3–4
- Understandable to unfamiliar adults most of the time
- Asks constant 'why' questions and enjoys explanations
- Begins genuine cooperative and pretend play with roles
- Draws recognisable shapes; dresses with some help
Ages 4–6
- Tells a story with a beginning, middle and end
- Recognises letters and many sounds; may begin writing their name
- Counts with meaning, compares quantities, notices patterns
- Negotiates, waits, and starts to see another child's point of view
Bilingual children develop on the same timeline
Children growing up with Bahasa Indonesia and English often mix the two, and their vocabulary is best counted across both languages together. Bilingualism does not cause speech delay — that is a persistent myth.
When to ask someone to look more closely
- Loss of a skill the child previously had
- No words by 18 months, or no two-word phrases by around 2.5 years
- Very little eye contact, shared attention or interest in other people
- Extreme, ongoing distress with everyday sounds, textures or transitions
Asking early is not alarmist. Early support is usually short and simple; late support is usually longer. If you are unsure, our founder offers private child development consultations for families who want a professional, unhurried conversation.
Frequently asked questions
- Does raising a child bilingually cause speech delay?
- No. Bilingual children reach language milestones on the same timeline when you count vocabulary across both languages. Mixing languages in one sentence is a normal, healthy stage.
- When should I be concerned about my child's development?
- Seek advice if your child loses a skill they had, has no words by 18 months or no two-word phrases by around two and a half, shows very little shared attention, or has extreme ongoing distress with everyday sensory experiences.
